The file below contains nine interesting problems to be solved by creating a linear equation and then solving it. 
Some of the problems are very old. Several are attributed to a French mathematician called Chuquet who lived in the 1400's, and several are attributed to Clavius, a German mathematician who lived in the 16 th century.
There are also some problems from Ancient Greece and two ancient Hindu problems.

This is an image of Clavius, a mathematician who lived in Germany (1538 - 1612). Clavius was primarily an astronomer, but he also wrote several mathematical text books , including Algebra in 1608.
